When I was a kid, fishing was a part of the way I would spend my time. I would ride my bike down to the Sacramento river and fish for afternoons to pass time. Nothing was better than hooking a fish and feeling a large tug on the end of the line. No greater feeling of seeing what would come up from the depth’s. I always imagined hooking the mother load of a leviathan. One morning there was a tournament in the marina bait shop. My childhood friend Matt and I saw something exciting as we planned for a day at the marina. The sign hung behind the manager said, “Biggest catch of the day wins a prize”. Well, little did I know there was an oil rig that had spilled in the river and effected a bunch of fish. In fact, fishing wasn’t going to happen within a few miles of our location. The usual fisherman in their high class boats would normally come in from the day with 6-10 foot fish on their floors. Today yielded nothing for them. However, for me, I was walking along the marina and saw a couple fish coming near shore that were HUGE! Never have I seen these fish this close! Matt and I ran down to the waters edge and literally tried to wrangle and catch one with our bare hands. We even tried to make a spear with our little swiss army pocket knife. We managed to muscle this beast into our wagon. Upon walking in the door of the bait shop the manager was shocked knowing the circumstances of the day. He awarded us with a six pack of Fanta Orange drink. You would have thought we won the lottery. We drank ourselves sick and took the fish home to show our families. We smelt of dead fish, we were sick with soda but we were proud.

The fire place lit and crackling, the choir music of Christmas carols and the sound of laughter and excitement of the kids. My heart is warmed in gratitude. This year so many amazing memories with family and friends. Creativity ventured into new areas and horizons. I feel blessed to connect at new events and make more friends.

This Christmas welcomes a new piece from the Kid in Me™ titled “Our Little Nativity”. I remember as a kid dressing up with my sister as Mary and Joseph. I could use a cane as my shepards staff and a doll crib to hold the doll. I was so impacted by the story. ..”for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

I am so thankful for what God has done in our family and in our lives this year. The gift of his son and the hope that he brought to this world is reason to celebrate. May your home be filled with joy, abounding love and the spirit of Christmas.

Blessings to you and yours.

There’s nothing like watching our kids set out on adventures and creativity. Recently Lil’ Noah and Griffin have been transforming the rooms of our house into forts, castles and hotels. During this season of life, as the kids are growing up, its triggered lots of memories. Mostly me as a kid with my own sister using our imagination to create worlds right in our own home. This week The Kid in Me celebrates childhood through my newest piece “Our Custom Hot Rod Speed Shop”. The car is made from cardboard boxes, the headlamp made from taped on styrofoam cups. Custom flames on the hood with a fork for windshield wipers. I used to use my San Francisco 49ers helmet as a race helmet. My sister an upside down pan on her head to fabricate and fix the car. Our ski goggles would be pulled from the winter stash of ski gear. We would grab the toolbox Grandpa gave us and go to town on our creations. May we soak up the memories of our kids and celebrate boredom as it spurs creativity. Keep a lot of tape around the house… It can come in handy.

As we drive back from the grocery store I’d pull the car over and ask one of them to climb up front into my lap. I showed them how to put the car in gear, look both ways and steer. It’s really incredible the excitement as they really think they are in control! Little do they know, dad has his hand hidden on the steering wheel below them “just in case”. We would have a blast as each kid takes a turn at the wheel. The Kid in Me™ by Noah celebrates this Father’s Day with “The First Drive”. This original pencil drawing is a study I am using for a future painting and is available on a first come first serve basis.

These memories are to be cherished. Before you know it the kids are too big to fit on your lap and then before you know it you are in the passenger seat while they drive.

Here we see the classic scene of the kids coming into the bedroom to wake Mom at 6am!! It’s classic, kids always are so excited to see their Mom on Mothers day and give her cards and a gift. They pick some half lived flowers, or weeds from the garden, they fix “their” favorite meal….doughnuts. Breakfast in bed is a “big deal” in our home. Usually the coffee mug is from a local pottery “create your own” place and has the kids writing and hand prints on it.

The Kid in Me celebrates this Mother’s Day with wishes for all Mom’s to get some rest. Sleep is a major thing for Mom and all she does. Even if it is doughnuts, wilted flowers and a 6am wake up call we remember that “It’s The Thought That Counts”.
